Manufacturers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company records, 1835-1948.

The records are comprised of maps depicting individual factories in thirty-five states and Canada. They are strongest for the states of Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. For each plant, three sets of drawings were produced -- a building layout, a cross-section showing the operations on each floor, and a birds-eye view of the plant. Activities and operations in each area of the plant, the number of workers, and the type of machinery in use were also indicated. There is a small series of supporting material such as articles, books and some copies of maps made before the full drawings were made. The maps are arranged by state, then city, and then company name. An index compiled by industry is available.
